Daniel Nahmod: Lyric Intensive

Lyrics are a funny thing. In one era, “She loves you, yeah yeah yeah” is revolutionary. In another, “Flying too high with some guy in the sky is my idea of nothing to do” is poetry. And in yet another, “Tonight’s gonna be a good night” announces a worldwide smash hit. Genre by genre, decade by decade, artist by artist, a successful lyric is a malleable thing – it must support and match the voice, the style, the song, and the moment…. but it seems that no other rules apply, at least in any universal way.
So, what about now, what about for us? We in this empower / positive music community may certainly hope for popularity, broad appeal, remuneration, memorability, even immortality. But we are also – and maybe even above all – attempting to employ our music to stir a feeling of hope, connection, kindness, optimism, universal love… but how? How does a lyric do THAT?
In this intensive Lyric Workshop, we will focus on some of the keys to making our song lyrics as impactful as they can be, and as true to our intentions as we can make them. Positivity, honesty, passion, insight, fresh language, humor, poetry, personal detail, universal perspective… Using discussions, examples, and a writing/rewriting exercise, we’ll take a closer look at the lyrics that move us, that tell the truth, and that make a positive difference in ourselves, in our community, and in our world.
